This weekend I moved forward in my yoga journey as a certified 500-hour yoga teacher.

This week I have been reflecting on gratitude and joy and as I was opening up the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, the first sutra on the page was 2.42:

saṃtoṣādanuttama sukhalābhaḥ
by contentment, supreme joy is gained.

When I first thought about contentment I thought it meant to sit back and do nothing, let things be as they are you’ll find happiness in the present moment. However, I think it’s so much more than that. Santosha or contentment is action. I think it’s about centering yourself in the moment and not focusing on the things we believe will bring us great happiness and joy; it’s already in us, we don’t need to seek it out.

Here are a few ways santosha can show up in our daily lives:

🪷Practicing Gratitude: we can shift our mindset away from what we lack to what we have.

🪷Practice Grounding: tune in to your breath, your body, and surrounding; be present in the moment.

🪷Let go of expectations: move away from the desire to meet specific outcomes or think your practice needs to look a certain way. Searching outside ourselves for happiness in any form will only result in more searching.

We are in a continual state of learning and growing; when we accept and recognize this we can become agents of change, experience contentment and find joy.

Today I’m reflecting on my yoga community as my 300 hour teacher training comes to an end with my last Monday night session. A mantra that is presenting itself to me is:

Lokāḥ Samastāḥ Sukhino Bhavantu

One translation that resonates with me is that “May everyone in the world be happy and free. And may my actions and words contribute to that truth.”

Maybe this mantra is showing up for me in a way to cultivate gratitude for the communities I have been a part of. For the educators, disrupters, caregivers, and more that have been a part of my yoga journey especially in my training. But I also think about how grateful I am for the space to create community like I have at @lotusyogagf or in my work at a Queer and Trans Resource Center.

As I think about the communities I am connected to, I reflect on how my words and actions contribute to the freedoms and work towards liberation. I think about how yoga shows up in these spaces in so many different forms and what I do to embrace and share it. Expressing gratitude to bring positivity in during these challenging times and letting go of the negative mind not only feels necessary but freeing.

Sequencing is something that tends to come pretty natural for me. When I first started teaching I would write down what I was going to teach and practice before class but I always ended up deviating from what I had planned.

As I became more comfortable in my teaching style and confidence as a teacher, I learned to connect with those taking my class. Some folks would share how they were feeling, their moods, their interests in yoga, life stories and experiences, and so much more. Developing a deeper connection, creating community, made me a better teacher. I learned to listen which helped me inform my sequencing for the classes I taught. One thing I like to do is ask my clients how they are feeling in the moment and if there is anything they want to explore in the class. Some share they want hip opening, some want to try inversions and arm balances. These types of shares help me curate an experience for everyone with keeping requests and interests in mind.

My point to all this is that it’s great if you need to plan out your class as an instructor. It’s also great if you have no plan and go with the flow. But I think it’s important to listen and connect to help foster a greater experience that embodies the practice and roots of yoga.

Starting something new by sharing my yoga journey and offering what I have learned along the way.

Just a little about me. I’m a queer educator and yoga teacher in Grand Forks, North Dakota. I teach in a way that offers strength and resilience, happiness and joy, along with the freedom to express and explore.

My hope is that this is a space to provide a variety of ways in which I embody yoga from discussions on philosophy and sequencing asana to guided meditations and more. It’s a space for community and a space for learning.
